The goal: Create a comprehensive and robust asset library for T-Mobile Tuesdays
As an evolution of the T-Mobile loyalty app, we were task to create a system of custom artwork ranging from small scale icons to larger illustrations that tell a story. In addition, we infused these illustrations with motion, using micro-animations and large-scale animations that may be used throughout various app screens, the site, social media and even outside of the digital space.
Things to Consider: the design evolution
When thinking about where we wanted to take the new look of the illustration, it was important for us to keep in mind what the T-Mobile Tuesdays brand represents, and what an evolution of the current style would look like. Although the T-Mobile brand at large is grounded in angular shapes and straight lines, we wanted to push the T-Mobile Tuesdays illustration to be an edgier, more youthful side to the corporate style. What if we introduced a completely different style to compliment the angularity of the current brand? Curved, bold stokes mixed with bold organic shapes grounded in the iconic T-Mobile magenta. The end result was so well received, that the T-Mobile brand team is now looking to roll this illustration style out to the brand at large.
Responsive design
Making sure that we design a cohesive system of illustrations is very important for consistency. One way to do that is to make sure the style is “scalable”—from icons to larger art, which is integral when thinking about mobile design. This will ensure that all illustration is consistent and evokes the same style.
Creating a system
As we roll out the illustrations, it’s important to make sure that we are creating a cohesive system that works well together. As the illustrations scale up, we add certain flairs of detail, even incorporating different opacities to create depth within the art. When looking at the illustrations as whole, they are connected in their visual standards.
brining it to life: Application
After the library is created, there is only one thing left to do—and that is applying this style throughout the T-Mobile app, to other branded material and to all of the other T-Mobile Tuesdays activations.
adding animation
The animation style we created for this style was using two dimensional illustration and infusing more realistic motion to the art. I felt as though this contrast played nicely together, and really brought the pieces to life. The way that the art moves manipulates perspective and adds an animated whimsy to the material.
